The Top 10 Websites You Never Heard Of
DamnInteresting.com is, well, pretty damned interesting.
Inflation is in full effect. Still in the midst of our current recession, which no one wants to admit is here, the Producer Price Index rises above expectations. Also the foreclosure rate is continuing to balloon:
Nevada had the highest foreclosure rate, with 6,087 foreclosures filed. California, Florida, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, Georgia, Connecticut, Ohio and Michigan rounded out the top 10.
This is definitely a crisis. I can remember a few years ago reading about the insanely high appreciation rates in Nevada and Florida, as high as 30%! Now if you are trying to sell a property you’ll have to take 30% less than its value, and that of course is if you can even find a seller.
Food is hypnotic in its control over us.
The more I read about how our brains react to food and how obesity is causing a healthcare crisis, the more convinced I am that food and drugs are essentially the same thing. If things keep up I wonder if we will have to get prescriptions for the food we buy one day because the government will decide we cant make our own responsible decisions.
Mr. Marshall does not belong to any traditional news organization. Instead, he is creating his own. His Web site, Talking Points Memo (www.talkingpointsmemo.com), is the first Internet-only news operation to receive the Polk [registration required] (though in 2003, an award for Internet reporting was given to the Center for Public Integrity), and certainly one of the most influential political blogs in the country.
The George Polk Award is like a Grammy for Journalism. Part of the reason we started this site is because we believe in the web as a legitimate media source and we want to contribute to it in a meaningful way.
Late last year, Pepsi filed a trademark for Pepsi Raw, a product aimed at the crowd preferring natural drinks. Raw will be made with all natural ingredients, opting for pure sugar cane over high-fructose corn syrup.
While science studies do not conclusively show that high-fructose corn syrup is any worse than sugar, my suspicions were raised upon seeing a graph showing the trend between corn syrup consumption and obesity. I think its great that this drink will be all natural as well as bottled in smaller bottles. Soda is great every now and then, but Americans drink entirely too much. I imagine current bottle sizes lead to some of this over-consumption. Hopefully Pepsi Raw will do well in Britain and appear on this side of the Atlantic.
In a study of obese adults at risk of heart disease, researchers found that those who trimmed calories and increased their whole-grain intake shed more belly fat and lowered their blood levels of C-reactive protein or CRP…”This is the first clinical study to prove that a diet rich in whole grains can lead to weight loss and reduce the risk of several chronic diseases,”..
According to this study, whole grains are a superior choice to refined grain products like white bread and other products made from white flour. So if you have some excess fat in your stomach you want to expel, time to change your diet.

Bruce Schneier’s excellent essay on a recent proposal to monitor all Internet communication. He uses the analogy of airline security to make his point. [via Daring Fireball]
Since 9/11, approximately three things have potentially improved airline security: reinforcing the cockpit doors, passengers realizing they have to fight back and — possibly — sky marshals. Everything else — all the security measures that affect privacy — is just security theater and a waste of effort.
I believe Schneier hits the point on the head. When you give up personal liberty for security, you may become more secure from the original threat, but a new threat is created, with the potential of being even more intrusive.
After a cease & desist put the breaks on Amplive’s Radiohead In Rainbows remix project…an agreement has been reached between all involved parties and Amplive has been granted permission to release Rainydayz Remixes for free to the general public.
I’m anxious to listen to this all the way through. In Rainbows was one of my favorite albums of last year.
